You’ve been in Beirut recently. How was it?
It was crazy. I’d never been there before. I thought bombs were going to land on my head but it was a breath of fresh air, it made me realise you don’t know a country until you visit it. I was drinking shots with gorgeous girls in a fancy bar, blinging it up. I didn’t expect that.

Are you big in Beirut?
Yes, my album was at number three in the Middle Eastern charts for five months. It’s mad. The people there just want to have fun like anyone else and the Lebanese girls are gorgeous.

What was playing at the Ruler of Dubai’s place like?
It was bonkers. It was a gig for his daughter’s 16th birthday and me and Akon played. His grounds were around 15 times the size of Hyde Park and we had to drive for 20 minutes through the desert, which was all gated, to get there. They’d recreated the Seven Wonders Of The World for her. It was phenomenal.

What’s the worst gig you’ve ever done?
I played in Pakistan a couple of years ago when three bombs went off in a one-mile radius of the venue. That was really scary.

You’ve just signed on the Cash Money label. What difference will that make to your career? I’m working with Miami in the same studios as Lil Wayne, Timbaland and Scott Storch. It’s weird to rub shoulders with people I look up to. They’d seen all my videos and told me what bits they liked. It was amazing. It means that hopefully I’ll get Neo or Lil Wayne on my tracks.

Will that change people’s perceptions of you?
It will. If I did a song with Madonna tomorrow, suddenly everyone would know who I am. Things like that propel you into the limelight.

Was it difficult to keep motivated when you were on your own independent label?
No, it was fun. I was on Virgin for three years – they put me on billboards and TV but I was a puppet on a string. Doing it on my own meant I could do exactly what I wanted.

Were you gutted when you got dropped?
They didn’t drop me because I wasn’t selling records, they’d decided that r’n’b in general wasn’t selling. They wanted me to do James Blunt-y stuff instead. They put me in a studio with rock producers, but who would I be fooling? You can’t make a French guy speak German and try to convince everyone he’s German. It wasn’t working so it came to an end.

Have any fans done anything weird to meet you?
There was a girl on my Australian tour who was in the front row at every show – she hardly wore anything so it was hard to miss her. She lost it at the last show and jumped on to my back on stage. She was clinging on like a monkey and security had to pull her off. She chased my car down the road after the gig and put an envelope with her passport and car keys in through the window. She said: ‘I want you to take everything I have.’ It was insane.

What’s the worst job you have ever had?
Putting bacon on the shelves at Marks & Spencer when I was a student. I had to spend all day in a walk-in refrigerator. I lasted eight days before I left.

Who is the rudest pop star you’ve met?
There are a lot of them unfortunately. I’m not the type to name names but I met an English rapper who was extremely up himself. I thought he had no right to be so up himself because he’s only ever had one hit. On the other hand, Keisha Buchanan from Sugababes is absolutely lovely and so is Alesha Dixon, she’s one of my closest friends. They’re really down to earth.
